Stroke Rehab (The Bobath Approach)
The Bobath concept (also known as neuro-developmental treatment or NDT) is an approach to post-stroke neurological rehabilitation. Any lasting stroke-related impairments in the brain are first identified during an initial assessment. The Bobath concept is founded on the idea of neuroplasticity. When an area of the brain is destroyed, some function can be lost up to the point of hemiplegia. Such losses can be at least partially compensated for through a process of neurological reorganization. In essence, non-affected areas of the brain learn to perform new tasks. Bobath therapy supplements this process of reorganization.
